I always knew that the decision to have kids would change my life. The very first time it really started to impact me was, accept it or not, selecting furniture for our first baby’s nursery. The entire house was decked out with pretty furniture, clean modern lines and edgy designs, where did a decorative play house fit into that? I was driven to give my baby an ordinary childhood, but could I do it without giving up the look of my place?
Of course I knew that metal sculptures possibly would not be the best nursery accessory, particularly by the time this small one was active. So I turned to some more conventional methods of decoration. I found a brilliant carpenter who was a year away from retirement and made his remaining days a great challenge! From a toy box with complex woodcarving to cute carvings lining the cot, I fit stunning detail in where ever I could.
During my first trip to the local baby store, I was let down. I had been expecting a huge range, more than I could see in a day. Sadly I was in a small town and we were fortunate to have just two baby stores. So I started searching online and before long I found precisely what I was after. From amazing older second hand pieces that just required a coat of French polish to be functional to trendy toys in bronzes, it was all out there on the internet.
Seven months in I had bought just about everything, from cloth nappies (and on 2nd thought disposable nappies) to all the standard baby accessories. The baby shower endowed me with a huge spread of conscientiously and lovingly selected gifts, from boutique crayons and gift cards for bassinets to disposable nappies. But the best gift of all was a baby sculpture kit from my sister in law, a present I could not wait to use.
After a problem free birth, I brought my adorable girl home for the 1st time. Quickly before her first bath at home, my partner and I made some of the best baby sculptures I have ever seen. Her small baby hands and feet all fit on the same bit of clay! Then we had to break out a canvas and our just bought body paints for another initiation rite, bum prints!
